While most people living in Steamboat choose the sports they participate in because of a genuine love for the activity, competition still gives many of us the opportunity to train for a specific event to see where we stand among our peers or simply as an excuse to get out and ride or run with others who share a passion for exercising in the Yampa Valley.
Steamboat Marathon: The biggest annual competition in the Yampa Valley, thousands of people are drawn to the early June event every year. The recipient of awards such as 2006 Colorado Runner Best Marathon and voted one of the top 10 most scenic marathons of the year by Runners World Magazine, the USATF certified course not only challenges runners as they push through the middle miles but also shows some of the spectacular views of the Yampa Valley along the way. Finishing through downtown Steamboat, the streets are lined every year with thousands of spectators cheering in every runner as they complete the astonishing feat.
The event features marathon, half-marathon and 10k races, all which prove to be competitive year after year. For more information, results and registration information look to: Steamboat Springs Marathon
Triathlon: Following a beautiful course just outside town, the Steamboat Springs Triathlon draws a growing crowd every year. Starting out on the edge of Lake Catamount the swim loops through the placid water and takes you to out to the bike transition area. The bike race takes you through the Yampa Valley and through downtown and back to the Lake. The finishing run takes you along dirt roads, next to Catamount to a finish line surrounded by cheering fans. An off-distance triathlon with a 3/4 mile swim, 20 mile bike and 4 mile run, this event is a great concluding event to the summer.

Running Race Series: Varying from 400 meters to 50 miles the Steamboat Springs Running Series provides a great opportunity for you to enjoy the beautiful trails around town throughout the summer and fall. Races differ not only in their distance, but the venues and terrains change with each race. One race, the Steamboat Sprint, draws kids and adults alike, racing 400 meters down Lincoln Ave. prior to the 4th of July Parade. Many of the other races are located on trails right outside of town, tackling Spring Creek, Mt. Werner, Howelsen Hill and others.

Town Challenge Bike Series: Drawing a different crowd, the Town Challenge bike races take advantage of the Steamboat Springs trails in a different setting. Most races take place on a Wednesday night throughout the summer and offer a great break in the middle of the week. These courses mostly occur on Emerald Mt. and Mount Werner, with courses that change with each race. Some races focus more on strength and pure climbing, while others alternate and offer some reprieve with exhilarating downhill stretches. These races offer a great opportunity to meet and ride with people your age and ability level. And if nothing else the camaraderie shared over drinks and popsicles at the finish line somehow tastes so much sweeter when the days climb is over.
