Early Season Powder Skiing in Steamboat Springs

by Sage Local on November 18, 2010

2nd day skiing this year and it already time to get your powder legs ready!  We got up to Dry Lake Campground this morning at 615 and carefully stuck skins to the bottom of our skis and started hiking up the road.  About a mile up we cut into the woods and began breaking trail through the untouched snow, making for a tougher climb up, but simultaneously getting everyone excited for skiing the virgin powder on the way down. Hiking with a friend who was quite fit, he quickly distanced himself from the rest of the group as he ‘ran’ on his skis for a majority of the climb.  We timed our climb well and were able to watch the sunrise over the valley before our first decent. After taking a few pictures we all eagerly jumped down the lines we had thought about our entire climb up.  Getting to the bottom of the first run we were all smiles, unbelieving that it was still a week before Thanksgiving and we were all floating on beautiful powder.  We were able to get 1 more descent in before we had to ski back down the road and get ready for the morning. Rolling into work just after 9 we decided that it was a great way to wake up and cant wait to get back out soon! With 74″ already having fallen on the mountain, and surely more on Buff Pass, the beginning of the year is looking excellent in Steamboat Springs!
