Full moons are typically seen with moderate interest and for the cramp they put on stargazing. In Steamboat, for many, the light gives us the ability to extend the day and continue enjoying the activities we love, long into the night.

I spent this past Friday night back on the mountain climbing up, really earning the downhill turns that were to follow later. Skins, for those unfamiliar, are long strips of synthetic material that are stuck to the bottom of skis allowing you to climb up the mountain. Perfect for side and back country hikes they are also super for late night, moon hikes. Getting out just as the moon was rising it was stunningly bright for 8pm. The climb took me a bit longer than it should have but the solitary climb in the dark was a refreshing break after a long week. Upon reaching the top i stopped to relax for a while. A combination of exhaustion and the beautiful view of downtown were both overwhelming.

Having reached the top fairly early in the evening i beat the cats, and skied down before they had the chance to make perfect the perfect lines of corduroy. Getting home i was quick to jump in bed to get a bit of sleep before getting back out to ski in a few short hours…
