The first annual Pro Cycling Challenge that came through Steamboat this past weekend seemed to be a success on all counts. With fans pouring in downtown and covering the courthouse lawn everyone seemed to be beside themselves as they watched the finish. The finish was a photo finish with almost every rider coming into the finish line within 10 seconds of each other.
On Friday, said Steamboat Springs more than lived up to the billing.
“Today was the most energetic stage I’ve ever been a part of in cycling — and maybe the biggest crowd ever,” saidPro Cycling Challenge CEO and Co-Chairman Shawn Hunter, whose resume includes stints as a top executive with the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Phoenix Coyotes, Deportivo Chivas and chief marketing officer and president of AEG Sports, among others.
“We think that was the biggest crowd of the week,” he continued. “Steamboat shined on a big platform.”
One fan was beside himself with the excitement at being able to see such fantastic, world renowned cyclists so close to home, He gushed, ‘You only get a few chances to see some of the greatest riders in the world. The Americans are doing so well that makes it even better. If you can’t go to France, you might as well come here. Please keep doing this. I mean every year.’
The Steamboat crowd was said to be one of the more energetic of the whole tour and will hopefully be a repeat for next year!
